Utilize our resources to help researchers discover better ways to improve patient health.
New England Health Imaging combines our clinical expertise with innovative research. With our experienced technical staff and knowledgeable team of radiologists we can be utilized as a resource for studies that require MRI. Our state-of-the-art equipment located throughout Massachusetts and Maine offers many locations from which to conduct research studies. Should you wish to partner with us to conduct your research, please contact us.
Examples of current Research Studies being conducted by New England Health Imaging are as follows:
Framingham Heart Study Aging Brain Study
MetroWest MRI has been engaged in an ongoing fashion with Boston University School of Medicine and the Framingham Heart Study to study the structure of the brain and how it may evolve as a result of the normal aging process. The MRI is then studied to assess findings that might correlate with changes in the subject's cognitive status. To this end, subjects are chosen from the Framingham Heart Study to undergo magnetic resonance imaging evaluation. The MRI findings are correlated with the battery of the psychological tests. The plan is to restudy these subjects, in future years, to determine whether any substantial changes have occurred in the brain that might correlate with their psychological testing. Due to the early success of this study, we have a high expectation this project will continue for many years.

Framingham Knee Osteoarthritis Study
In conjunction with Boston University School of Medicine, MetroWest MRI is engaged in a long-term research study of knee osteoarthritis, the most common cause of knee pain. The study involves a large number of members of the Offspring Cohort of the Framingham Heart Study and other participants from the MetroWest Community who will undergo a series of tests including magnetic resonance imaging of their knees. The long-term goal of this project is to understand how often osteoarthritis occurs and what causes it. To this end, magnetic resonance imaging is employed to assess the various soft tissues inside the knee including the menisci and ligaments, as well as the bones around the knee (e.g., the femur, tibia and patella). This study is to continue for several years and it should help us better understand what factors influence the development of osteoarthritis so that we can prevent its occurrence.
